Kawai KDP90 Review – An In-Depth Look At The KDP90

The Japan based company Kawai has been making excellent digital pianos ever since the instrument began to gain popularity, but until recently, they didn’t offer any furniture-style digital pianos. With the KDP90, however, this fortunately changed. The KDP90 is an affordable offering that still has all the same great features and characteristics that make Kawai pianos so popular. In this Kawai KDP90 review, we’ll take a look at these features, as well as analyze the pros, cons, and other specifications of the instrument.

The primary disadvantage of the KDP90 is that it does not come with a large number of digital features such as USB connectivity, multi-track recording, and auto accompaniment.

Sound Quality of the KDP90

Considering its relative lack of a great many digital features, it could be said that the KDP90 does a few things and does them excellently. One of these things is producing a great acoustic sound. Each note is individually sampled using Kawai’s Harmonic Imaging technology, leading to a much higher quality sound than a piano that employs the less expensive mass sampling is able to produce, and the KDP90 has a wonderfully even balance and volume across the entire keyboard.

Two other things that add to the sound quality of the Kawai KDP90 is its 192 notes of polyphony and its pedal resonance system. The latter of these replicates the resonation of real strings when the pedal is held down. All of these things lead to a sound that is remarkably close to that of an acoustic piano.

Key Action and Realism of the KDP90

The Advanced Hammer Action IV-F key action of the KDP90 makes it one of the most responsively realistic digital pianos on the market. The keyboard is weighted and graded, giving it the feel when you strike the keys that different sized hammers are actually being lifted and making it feel remarkably similar to playing an acoustic piano.

Other Features and Specifications of the KDP90

While the KDP90 may be missing a few features that are commonplace on other models, there are several nice features that it does include, some of which can’t be found on any other instrument. One of the most novel of these is a program called Concert Magic, which allows even those with no piano experience to “play” any of forty built-in songs. With Concert Magic, any key pressed will play the correct note.

Another nice program is the included Alfred piano lessons, which can help you get a start with the piano if you are a beginner.

Besides these, other features of the KDP90 include MIDI connectivity, one-track recording, damper, sostenuto, and soft pedals, and a high-quality built-in stereo speaker system.

Another nice advantage to the KDP90 is its attractive design. The rosewood finish and sturdy build are both quite aesthetically pleasing, particularly for piano in the KDP90’s price range.

Built by a respected company and built well, the KDP90 is an excellent furniture-style digital piano for a very reasonable price, making it a good choice for beginners and experienced pianists alike.
